Eugene Cody Spencer
December 29, 1943 – November 28, 2017
With great sadness we announce the passing of Gene Spencer on November 28, 2017. He passed away peacefully at home after a short but valiant battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Donna, his sister Doreen Flett, his 3 daughters; Traci (Rob), Lyndsay (David), and Katie (Matt), his beloved grandchildren Rachel, Ethan, and Quinn, and his mother-in-law Tilley Sorenson. Predeceased by his mother and father Aileen and Cody Spencer, brother Darryl Spencer, and father-in-law Arne Sorenson.
Gene was born in Loughheed, Alberta and grew up in Calgary. He spoke fondly of his childhood and often reminisced about summers spent working on his parent’s ranch, water-skiing at Sylvan Lake, skiing at Mt. Norquay, and learning to skate as soon as he could walk. After high school Gene attended the University of Denver where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business.
In 1972, Gene moved to Vancouver where he met Donna. They married in 1974 and settled in Victoria, BC where he spent the majority of his adult life. Gene spent many years working for the Attorney General before becoming a manager at System Consulting until his retirement in 2006.
Gene was a true sports enthusiast and played hockey and golf up until his early 70’s. He loved to travel and enjoyed many memorable vacations with his family over the years. He will be fondly remembered for his quiet nature and kind and generous spirit. He was truly devoted to his family and will be deeply missed.
We wish to thank our home care nurse Shelley, as well at the community palliative physicians for their support. Rather than have a funeral service, Gene requested a celebration that he could be part of. Three weeks before his passing, his entire family gathered on the west coast to celebrate his life. It was a special occasion to honour a wonderful man.
